What is Cholecystitis?

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder — a small, pear‑shaped organ located beneath the liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats. Most cases of cholecystitis occur when a gallstone blocks the duct that drains bile, causing swelling, pain, and sometimes infection.

Common Symptoms of Cholecystitis

  • Sudden pain in the right upper or mid abdomen

  • Pain that may spread to the right shoulder or back

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Jaundice
